Solution to Avent Bottle leak

When was the last time you had the milk leaking between the plastic ring and bottle? You are wondering why sometimes it leaks, and at times it doesn't. Twisting it tightly or loosening it doesn't help. You have searched Avent website, and asked around 'is there a special way' in using Avent feeding bottle, other than putting the nipple, plastic ring and bottle together. Well, I think I have the answer for you.

When I first started feeding my son, I had the same exact problem. It left me in confusion as to why it leaks sometimes. Instead of feeling frustrated, the 'mysterious' leak got me really curious.

The Avent bottle nipple has three air valves near the base of the nipple. As we all know the valve lets air into the bottle to prevent any vacuum build-up.
Alright, now take a look at the plastic ring. If you look closely, there are four sets of fins around the plastic ring.

Now you just need to place and align the nipple with at least two of the air valves within the fins before putting it together. Voila! That's it no more leaks!
Take note, if you twist it too tight the valves won't work properly and therefore creating a vacuum in the bottle and milk won't flow out that easily. I can't tell you how tight is tight enough for you, so some trial and error is needed. Or you might want to checkout my method here. I'd like to add that over tightening it will affect the alignment ( credits and thanks to 'adhis' for her tip ).

Despite this, my wife and I still use Avent bottles and in fact we've bought over 18 bottles to date and still using it for our little baby girl. Avent feeding bottles is still one the best bottles around.

So I hope this little trick helped you, and happy feeding! :)

ps. I have seen some sites and blogs posting up my method, I'd appreciate it if you give credit where it's due, that's all I ask =).

*Update: 08 October 2009
Avent has started selling a newer version of the Avent BPA free bottles more than a month ago. This new bottle has an extra blue/white ring and it's anti-colic system is a two piece system ( instead of one-piece originally ). People who bought these did not experience any leaks. Checkout the 9oz dual pack on Amazon.com.

  1. Hello, you got a nice blog. This method really works and thank you very much for it.

  2. Thanks I'm glad it worked for you.

By the way, I can see I get alot of hits for this post of mine. Just drop a comment whether it works for you or not :P.

  3. This works!! Thanks so much for relieving so much frustration!!

  4. This alone didn't do it for me...I think correctly tightening the ring is key. On another website someone said that Avent support instructed them to assemble with the protective cap on, and screw it together by holding onto the cap. The ring is tight enough when the cap moves independently of the ring. I tried it and it works! It's also important to make sure the ring and nipple are wet when assembled.

  5. To anon posted on 31 July: Glad it worked for you :)

In reply to the latest comment: I have tried all those method you mentioned. But it didn't work for me. In fact I always put on the protective cap on first then screw it in. Any degree of tightness or wetting it all didn't solve it either.

With my method I don't even need to wet them or screw tightly, and it actually solved my problem :). Well, it's mind boggling isn't it.

Anyway, thanks for visiting my blog. :)

  7. "align the nipple with at least two of the air valves"

Where are the air valves on the nipple? I see the fins on the ring but I don't see the air valves on the nipple...

I don't know how I do it, but it doesn't leak so much with level 3 nipples but level 2 nipple leaks crazy. Have you noticed that too?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Terumi,

Please click on the first photo of my post. You'll be able to see a bigger photo of the bottle nipple.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Thanks, I noticed these after I posted. Still leaks on Lv.2 though...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hi, We are having a problem with it leaking on the bottom of the bottle, I take it those filters need replaced so often hence it leaking i guess . Or am i wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  11. terumi, haven't noticed that... but once i get the alignment right, no leaks even for level 2.

Hi jay, if it leaks on the bottom of the bottle I'm sure it's easy to check for cracks? Or did you mean it leaks between the plastic ring and the bottle?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank you!!! I was getting so frustrated all the time with sticky milky hands and a wet sticky milky baby!! I think youre the only person who posted anything that actually works!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. You're welcome. A wet sticky milky baby, now that sounds cute. =)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh my goodness THANKS YOU SOOOO Much for this post. I have used Avent bottles for 7 years thru 3 kids and never had this problem before. This new Airflex design is nuts. I was so ready to trash all my bottles. I have the same bottles and have replaced the nipples with each child. This even works with the older bottles.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Glad you found my site before you dumped the bottles =). I've only used Avent bottles for 4 years plus... did the previous bottles leak too?

    ReplyDelete
  16. thanks for the tips! tried it this morning and it has worked so far... seems to improve flow as well which I think was an issue for me

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is amazing!!!! Thanks so much. I just bought the new PBA free bottles and thought that maybe it was just the new way they were making the bottle. I tried this meathod and were soggy diaper bag free!

    ReplyDelete
  18. My friend referred me to your site - I was also almost ready to chuck out these stupid leaky bottles (we used the Avent system with our first child, four years ago, and I don't remember it leaking this much). Just tried your method today and is seems to work...fingers crossed!! THANK YOU!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. You're welcome, I'm glad it worked for you.

I'll be uploading better pictures to replace the current ones.

    ReplyDelete
  20. great, looking forward to the new pics, because we still can't figure it out :)
    THANKS!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ok, I have uploaded a new set of photos with description added in. I hope this will help those who had problems earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks a bunch! It was amazing...it did just the trick! Now I can keep my avent bottles and not get frustrated with them. Now if only my 5 month old will take the bottle. That's a whole other story (gotta go back to work next week).

    ReplyDelete
  23. You're most welcome. Wonder why your baby doesn't want the bottle. Bad experience from previous spillage?

    ReplyDelete
  24. we tried, unfotunately, it's still leak.:-(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Make sure it's not leaking between the cap n plastic ring. If it is, you gotta hold the cap together and shake.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm pretty sure. It's leaking between the bottle and the cap. Do you have any other idea? Anyways, thank you for your response. I will come to check your comment again. BTW, when I shake, I hold everything together.
Oh! one thing I noticed, it's not leaking at the first time we used, but leak when we used it for the 3rd time then continue leaking.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you. Are yours the new BPA free bottles? How long have you been using these?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have the BPA free bottles...they still leak!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well, I've no idea why it didn't work for you. This method works for me even with the BPA free bottles, plus some of my relatives who are using it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. THANK YOU!!!!!!! I was about to throw out all of these stupid f---ing bottles, but I thought I'd give it one last chance on the Internet. You saved me a bit of time and money!

    ReplyDelete
  31. You're welcome. Yeah, I know it can be really stressful and annoying when the bottle does that. It's like roulette, if you're not lucky it leaks most of the time when you aligned the wrong spots unintentionally.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We've just checked all our nipples and rings using your suggestion and are hoping for fewer leaks this week! They've been driving us crazy!! I noticed that a few of our nipples actually have 5 vents - I think these may be adjustable flow ones. We can get three (but not four) of them lined up with the fins. Any ideas about these?

    ReplyDelete
  33. hi ashersmommy,

I have not tested it out on the variable flow teats. I don't remember seeing that many air vents on the variable flow ones at the shop?

    ReplyDelete
  34. thank you! Im going to give it a try. Now I just need to figure out which nipple 2 or 3 is best.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thank you. I have teats with 3 air vents and 6 vents. the 6 air vent teats are those from the Avent "Naturally" series. My initial problems started with the naturally series and I'd decided to stick to water feeding with those teats but today, the 3 vent teats also leaked. Got fedup so i searched and stumbled on your site.

I played around with the 6 vent teats and concluded that out of the 6 vents, 4 has to be behind the 4 fins of the plastic ring and the leak will be fixed. Once again, thank you Crunchy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Using level 2 with the new BPA free version - I NEVER had this problem with the old BPA containing ones. I have been working on this following your method for 20 minutes and it's just not working, still leaking. Ugh...any chance you also were using the new BPA free bottles with level 2 nipples?

    ReplyDelete
  37. ad, I've never used Avent 'naturally' series that has 6 air vents and good to hear the same idea still works. Thanks for letting us know. =)

anonymous, I didn't have a chance to test the level 2 ones. Maybe you can try to do the opposite, for example, aligning two air valves outside the fins. I know it sounds crazy... but you can give it a try.

Maybe we can start writing a book about 'The ART of using Avent bottles'.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have a question regarding this anti-colic bottles. Do the air enter the bottle strictly from the air vents only or do they enter from the teats when the baby 'releases' the grip? I'm concerned because I've seen the illustration on the packaging of the bottles and it shows that air enters from the vents. However, I noticed air entering the bottle when my baby takes a rest from feeding. I could have over-tightened my bottle right? -ad

    ReplyDelete
  39. If I'm not mistaken, most of the air goes through those 'air vents' on the nipple. Can't be sure if any air enters through the nipple 'holes'.

Yup, remember not to over-tightened. I have a method here http://mecrunchy.blogspot.com/2008/01/baby-bottle-and-nipple-at-5-12-months.html on how to tightened...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thank you.

I think I may have found the solution to the "how tight" question, which for me was crucial to making it leak free. If you tighten by using the plastic ring, the nipple and ring do not turn at the same rate, and you lose the seal you so carefully created with aligning the fins. If you place the cap on the nipple/ring assembly and tighten using the cap, it appears to apply the right amount of torque, keeping the nipple/ring aligned and not over tightening. If you tighten the cap too hard, it will spin freely on the ring and not tighten the ring any more, much like a torque wrench.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Disregard previous post. I did 5 successful trials with no leaking and I thought I had it solved, them when I did it at 3am, leaks! Everything was lined up properly tightened right, and it didn't matter. Who thought it was a good idea to invent a bottle that requires a NASA engineer to assemble? Thanks for all of your tips, but I've decided these things just aren't worth the effort.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've had about, maybe 200 bottles as sample ( bottles that my relatives, friends and I bought, old and new ones ) that never leaked with this method.

For your information I'm nowhere near a NASA engineer. Just a dad who figured out a way to deal with it and too cheapskate to throw away the bottles.

Gotta agree on that, we're not buying a puzzle game to entertain or annoy ourselves but a hassle free FEEDING BOTTLE.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I can't even explain how frustrated I have been getting!

    ReplyDelete
  44. How in the world did you ever figure this out? It works and it never crossed my mind to do this in the months that I have been struggling with these leaky bottles.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You are a genius. I'm grateful that your curiosity and brilliance paid off for so many other people, including myself! I was another guy ready to consider other manufacturer's systems until I found your post, and gave it a test. Here is an internet high five for you!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sorry for the late reply, been abit busy lately.

To those who responded, glad it worked for you =).

adam hh, 'genius' is overrated, 'lucky' is more appropriate. But i'll take that internet high five =D

    ReplyDelete
  47. I tried your fixes and they are still leaking. Today I took the rings and nipples apart four times, then after losing a half ounce of breastmilk I gave up. I went and bought new bottles today, glass munchkin bottles.
Thanks for your advice though, glad it's working for others!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sorry Crunchy, but it doesn't work for me. I tried this prior to finding your blog (so people may not be taking credit from you) and have not had much change in whether or not the bottle will leak. Another problem is the newer tinted bottles (with the Philips label) seem to leak more than the older ones. Anyone else have this problem? I'm assuming it's because the fins on the bottle itself have been changed. A different alignment is probably required. Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I find that this tip does not work for people who then screw the lid on too tight which causes the nipple to move out of alignment with the ring. So, maybe aligning the vents at the far side of the fins so if the nipple is moved the air vents are still under the fins?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I haven't tried that method, but I have checked the bottles after they've leaked to see whether the vents are still aligned and they have been. I try to be careful not to screw the lid on too tight, but I'll be sure to give your advice a shot. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you for this! We were so upset when we couldn't figure out why our bottles kept leaking periodically and would be a different bottle each time!

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is very interesting, we'll have to try it. Usually I just unscrew the ring, turn the bottle a quarter turn to the right or left, then reseat the ring and tighten and it stops leaking. It works for me 90% of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thank you so much!! IT WORKS!!!!!!!!! One more light night spillage, and I was going to throw them out the window.

    ReplyDelete
  54. here is another tip. there is a little nick in the white plastic ring. it is small but it is there. line that up with one of the vent gaps when screwing the cap on. this is, in essence, the same thing you are suggesting. cheers.
on another note: AVENT! are you listening?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dear Mr. Crunchy and mikel,

I love you both. Thank you! I tried the alignment and it worked for me! I tried screwing the top on using the protective cap and it never turned independently of the ring. Too tight a fit. Either way, no leaking THANK GOD! Also I never had leaking on #1's but I have with the #2's we are using now.
AVENT Please send freaking directions with your bottles!

    ReplyDelete
  56. adhis, thanks for the additional tip. If we screw it on too tight, the alignment will definitely be affected.

mikel, great tip =). Sometimes it can be a challenge to align them even on normal lighting conditions. This little nick on the outside of the white plastic ring helps alot =).

    ReplyDelete
  57. so far so good for me! Thanks so much - was about to spend a fortune on changing bottles/steriliser/bottle warmer/carry bag to Tommy Tippee. I used Avent with my first child no probs but this time major leaking. I can't believe that Avent aren't correcting this or at least detailing how to correctly put the teats in!!! Thanks for saving me a fortune!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Do you have an update to the sippee? We're still using the avent system, but with the sippee spout... crazy leaking. The liquid gets trapped within the rubber I squirts out the breather up top.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks for the detailed advice. I have tried your method but it still leaks randomly. I will add aligning one of the vents to the small nick on the external part of the ring and see how it goes. But for right now I am so frustrated.

If you don't mind, could you go over using the protective cap to help gauge whether the ring is screwed on too tight? I read your other posting about turning it 1.5 cm but I'm having difficulty estimating the right length.

Thanks again for your time and effort.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i hope your method works!!! these crappy bottles are driving me insane...i cant believe other people are having this problem...AVENT - advise your consumers properly on something sooooo important!!!! 10 months now i have tolerated this....

    ReplyDelete
  61. Worked for me! What a relief -- I thought I was going crazy. Thanks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I tired your method of aligning the air valves with the fins, but my bottles still leak like crazy. Is there anything else that I can try? I'm so mad I'm ready to just throw the bottles out of the window. Please Help!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I tried your method last night too, still got some leakage. It is so weird, I used the Avent bottles with my son in 2006 and did not have issues. This time around with my daughter, I bought the new BPA free ones, and they leak like crazy. I may switch bottles too, because even if I get the hang of it, it would be too complicated to give the grandparents or any other babysitter the Avent bottle tutorial. You should just be able to screw on the lid and feed!

    ReplyDelete
  64. thanks for the nice tip. I'll try it out... Yee from Thailand

    ReplyDelete
  65. Do not buy these bottles, period. Quality control is sub-par, above method is good idea, but not consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  66. My baby is almost a month old and Im using Avent bottles. Aside from it leaks sometimes, it seems like my baby sounds like she is slurping when she is eating. Im beginning to think that the milk flow is too fast for her. Any suggestion why she sounds like she havent been fed for dayswith the Avent bottle? Is it the nipple or is it just my baby? I think this is why she is a little bit gassy. Aslo she is having a hard time to burp.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Thanks!!! it works for me most of the time!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hi laramitch, most probably your baby need some time to get use to the nipple. I wouldn't worry if he/she finishes his/her feed most of the time.

For others who still get the occasional leak following my method. Unscrew and check the air valves again, you'll be surprised that it has moved from it's place because of over-tightening.

    Goodluck feeding =)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Simply awesome! My wife and I bought Avent bottles because we trust bottles made in Europe and not those ones that might be made with inferior and dangerous materials from China. Your posting did the trick!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thank you so much for your post. I have been so frustrated with LEAKY BOTTLES! I am excited to try this new trick.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ya, I just spotted the little nick in the ring and because it's a triangle like the 'V' in AVENT, I started lining them up before screwing on... works a teat! Haha

    ReplyDelete
  72. THANK YOU!!!! I am so tired of listening to my husband's ranting just about every time he feeds the baby. :-) We will give this a try.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I am so excited to have found your post before I began searching the internet (I did visit Advent.com with no luck). I used Playtex bottles for a long time and decided to switch to the new Avent PBA Free bottles in the last month. I have been so frustrated, that I end up using the Playtex bottles until I am not irritated with the Avent ones. I really hope your method works! Thank you so much for taking the time to help the rest of us parents out! You should be on Avent payroll for all the people you have saved from moving to the next product. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  74. thanksss!! i was going crazy wondering why they leaked

    ReplyDelete
  75. Avent bottles are junk. I'm thinking of burning them before my wife catches me. We can send a man to the moon but they can't make a bottle that doesn't leak. Incredible. Avent should be ashamed of themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  76. thanks so much, it worked for us. We used Avent bottles 5 years ago and never had any problem. But with the new bottles, it leaked every time and we were so frustrated. I had a a crying baby while I tried to adjust the ring, but it didn't matter how hard I tried, it still leaked. I was thinking about changing the bottle but I love how easy it is to wash the Avent bottles so I googled and found this site. This made my day!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thank you, thank you, thank you! The leaking has been driving me crazy and I already threw bottles away thinking they were the problem. It gets to be expensive! Your advice was so helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  78. OMG THANK You So Much this worked for me!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Worked for me today! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  81. thanks...it worked for me.

    ReplyDelete
  82. wow, i gotta try out your method. thanks for the clear and detailed explanations. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well thank you so much...we will try your method and let you know how it works...my other half was more than thrilled to know that he wasn't crazy, as the leaking rarely happened to me. Hopefully we will never have to worry about every bottle we have brought with leaking onto all of the diapers and clothes we have brought with in the diaper bag.

    ReplyDelete
  84. 1st thanks for this blog and feedback... I seriously have never found anything MORE F'ing frustrating than these bottles!! However my son LOVES them and won't drink from other bottles... I've been wahing bedding daily due to the horrible smell of sour milk - GRRRR. My husband's solution was to tighten, tighten, and more tighten - to the point I can't get the stupid thing apart (and he's either knocked out asleep while I'm in the kitchen plotting his death or at work while I'm at home plotting his death) I just wanted to add my findings (which may have been posted in one of the links within the replies (I didn't click the link - so if it's already typed sorry for the duplicate)

If you note on the nipple there are numbers going around them (the number of nipple size/gage whatever) only 1 of the numbers lines up with an air vent thingy... you want to line THAT number up with the ding/groove on the side of the ring.

Then twist the ring only (don't hold the nipple) you twist the ring to the point it spins independent of the nipple but not past the point that the ding is now centered between two numbers on the nipple. That's tight enough and won't leak!

YAY for non leaking avent bottles.... grrrrr sooooooooooooooooooooooo frustrating!!!! OMFG!!! k - rant over - thanks for this blog, great advice and totalllllly pointed me in the right direction :)))))

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm laughing so hard with the previous post of the woman plotting her husband's death! I used Avent for my first child, who's almost 5 yrs old now, and I recall having the freakin' leaking problem...but definitely, it has gotten worse with the new BPA free ones. I've tried some other brands (Dr. Browns, Medela) and they sometimes leak too (specially the Dr Browns wide neck ones)..So I decided to stick to Avent, since they are the easiest to wash and to use with powder formula.

My husband complains so much of the leaks each time he has to feed the baby...Also, it seems to leak more when the baby is crying desperately!

I will try your tips and get back at you if they work. Thank you for taking the time to do this!!!

    Rox

    ReplyDelete
  86. I forgot to add that by aligning the vent under the number of the nipple with the triangle in the outside of the ring, you automatically align the other two vents with the inside fins of the ring.

Let's see if it works out!

  87. wow -- thanks for the post and pictures. This leaking issue has been driving me insane. I just tried your solution and no leaking so far the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Amazing! I am glad you posted this. My husband and I always thought it's time to change the nipple or buy a new bottle because of the mysterious leaks and it's so annoying re-tightening it up. After googling our problem I found out that most parents' using Avent bootles had the same problems. Thanks for the tips! ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  89. Thank you so much, I was about to throw the bottles accross the room.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Just came across your blog. We've been using Avent bottles with the Isis pump for about a month. The very first time we used them, I tightened the ring semi-tight and found that it leaked. Assuming that I hadn't tightened it enough, I did it up REALLY tight and the leaking stopped. They've never leaked since then, apart from a couple of occasions when my wife tightened them as she sometimes doesn't have the strength to tighten them as I would. We'll try your method next time and hopefully it'll work so there'll be no need to tighten the heck out of them in the future...

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'll never buy Avent anything again, with a new baby you have enough to deal with without having to put up with hassles like this.

For the sake of other new parents please make your opinions on the bottles known on review sites etc. Maybe then Avent might make proper bottles.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Seems to me this is a faulty design that is affecting a sh*tload of people. Can everyone say class-action?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Looks like Avent have fixed this issue with their new bottles (in the blue box). I complained to Avent and they replaced all of my leaky bottles with the new non-leaky ones. The new ones have an additional ring piece that goes in after the nipple. Yes, it's another piece to wash but they don't leak!!

    ReplyDelete
  94. That's good news. Do you have a photo of it? Can you upload a photo and paste the link here for all to see?

    ReplyDelete
  95. That's good news for all especially the company :D. Looks like they have come to terms that it's a design fault.

Some info of the new bottles are on their official website www.avent.com . Now they call it a two-piece ( instead of one-piece ) anti-colic system.

Well, the 'leaky' saga is over with the new bottles, glad to have helped everyone who had this problem.

Thanks for the comments and humor, happy feeding and please don't plot your own husband/wife's death. :P

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hi Crunchy, just wanted to thank you for your advice above, it worked! I did call Avent and they are sending me a few new styled bottles to try but in the meantime your technique, along with wetting the ring prior to screwing onto bottle, does the trick!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Thanks for this post. I kept complaining to my husband about these bottles and he did a search and found your post. I tried it and so far so good. I also called Avent and they are sending me 4 new bottles with their new technology. I didn't even have to ask for them. I stated that they are annoying and constantly leak and she said she would send me replacements...no questions asked. I look forward to putting an end to my frustration. Thanks again for the post! :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Thank you so much for this site! Avent should thank you. A lot of people don't think you need to read instructions on putting a bottle together, so I'm sure it was mentioned in the box. But we tried this and it worked! I just knew it couldn't of been Avent especially with the price we paid for them!

Also, we have the BPA free ones and we did have to use your method. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Thank you for so much for figuring this out and posting it.
I picked up a couple of the blue packaged two piece bottles and they seem to work fine with no leaks.
Just got off the phone with Philips and like j. henry said they have a redesigned honey colored bottle now as well. They're sending me four of those and if they work then all I need to do is call them back, send back my honey colored one piece bottles, and they'll replace them with the new design. So it looks like all we need to do is call them up to have our bottle problems fixed.

  100. omg, thank you SO much! i have been getting so frustrated with these dang bottles and they're brand spankin new! i knew it had something to do with the nipples but i couldn't figure it out! it's too bad i've waited until baby's 8 months old to even look it up! so much frustration could have been avoided! thanks so much!

  101. Hi all,

I just wanted to share another method which works before I found this site.

Just turn the ring anti clockwise until you hear a click sound. Then turn it clockwise to lock it tight.

I will give the method taught on this site a try as well.

  102. Thank you so much!! cannot explain the fustration of these bottles!!! in the middle of the night it was seriously making me want to cry!!! thank you for your help! :)

  103. Thank you for this - I just covered my son in formula and he was none too impressed!! Will adjust all the teats in a minute ;)

  104. Hello,

We were really frustated with the leakage. It really worked for us. Thanks a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  105. hey thanks, I think it works, I have not tested all my bottles, but tried one with just water and seems to be working, will try more with milk and hope you do not mind i post your link to singaporemotherhood website as many mummies there are facing the same problem, Thanks a million!

  107. How did you get the bottles replaced by AVENT?? I have used them for my 6 week old son and just so over this brand and system (unless I get replacement bottles like poster above). For first son I used NUK and thought their system was a pain, with the teat having to be in the baby's mouth a certain way. But nothing compared to these leaky bottles and the solution posted by curious and driven consumer! I think AVENT has some explaining (and replacing) to do.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hi there, I've tried but sadly it didn't on mine. I hv given up, am changing to another brand tomorrow. Thks anyway. Btw, from your comments on your post, I hv the reason to believe you actually work for Avent. If you are, you hv some explanation to do.

    ReplyDelete
  109. To the anonymous above,

I heard making baseless accusation seems to be a fad for some people especially when they are hiding behind the screen.

To sam and mummy chan, and others who got it to work, I'm glad it helped.

    ReplyDelete
  110. It seems to me that the bottles are all leaking now that I have tried your method - have no idea why, but it is making me more frustrated than ever before. I did contact Avent and they promised to send the bottles to me here in Europe via London office, but hey have not come soon enough!! I may have to go out NOW to buy some other brand as I am going bonkers over these f*&$#ing leaking bottles!!!!!

Wow. Are you a detective or something? I can't believe us stupid folks didn't figure out that secret long ago! All this time I thought it was Professor Plum with the candlestick in the library.

Where do I send a check for your sleuthing services??

    ReplyDelete
  112. This seem to worked just fine for me, thank you.... Seem you just need to make sure the niple is pulled all the way back and making sure is align, but for does that can get this to work by looking at your simple instructions i really feel sorry for their kids...

    ReplyDelete
  113. Sadly it didnt work on my BPA free bottles, but thanks anyway ; )

    ReplyDelete
  114. thanks 4 this it has been a fantastic help i have just moved onto number 2 teats and its been a nightmare i had no probs with number 1 teats!

  115. The bottles with the blue ring leak too! It is infuriating! I plan to try your tip and hope it works. I feel duped spending all that money on leaky bottles and fantasize about the Avent company making it up to us somehow (when I'm not dreamng of crushing the bottles with my car in a rage.)

    ReplyDelete
  116. I contacted Avent, and they sent me replacement bottles... of the same exact thing! They didn't send me the new ones.

Why would they think that all 9 of my bottles leaked and would be remedied by sending me 9 more of the same?

    ReplyDelete
  117. I contacted Avent and they also send me the same that I already had - twice! When I told them this, they said that I should try the bottles as they were improved. Didn't even bother. Tossed them and went out immediatelty and bought Born Free bottles. Baby and parents doing 100% better!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I have tried all these methods and some of them DO work sometimes. However, I haven't had complete success, always. I DO have good news though...my brother in New Zealand gave me the best tip for leak free bottles that WORKS EVERY TIME!...wrap a double layer of cling film/glad wrap/cellophane between the neck and collar of the bottle when you assemble them/screw the teat on. Thanx Vin!!

    ReplyDelete
  119. WOW - cling wrap????? Hopefully it doesn't have a rip - did you know that cling wrap would choke your baby even if the most smallest piece was to come off. I would rather have a leaky bottle than a dead baby. Get rid of the cling wrap and fix the bottle problem with a safer method please!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Thanks for sharing this. I'll try these trick later.

However, will the above instructions work on BPA-free bottles? I have regular avent bottles and they never leak. I only experienced it with the BPA-free bottles. I am very disapppointed. Please help. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  121. H, Crunchy! It's me again. Unfortunately, it didn't work on my BPA-free bottles. Btw, where do I find that little nick outside the ring? Can you post a picture? Thanks for your help.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Yes, Crunchy's method works on BPA-free bottles; it worked on all 9 of mine.

    ReplyDelete
  123. @Adhis - How come it didn't work on mine? I went ahead and bought new airflex bottles last week. They don't leak at all.

    ReplyDelete
  124. it works it works it works it works!!!!!!thankyoooooooooooooo so much xxx

    ReplyDelete
  125. Great idea, was at my wit's end trying to prevent the leak. Worked like a charm! Will let others know and will give credit where it's due. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  126. Thanks for the tip! Tried it and it worked first time- would have been great if Avent could have been so helpful in the first place!! Well done you xxx

    ReplyDelete
  127. are you guys nuts, it does not work. if you line the two vents up with the "fins" and rotate the bottle on its side it still leaks from the vent that isnt lined up with a fin. avent says to wet the nipple, it doesnt always work and it sucks to do when your out. we have the older clear ones too, they never leak. the honey colored ones have 3 rows of thread on the neck, the clear older ones have 2. i cant find any other difference, the nipples and rings are the same. avent denied the difference and said there is no difference except the material. i offered to send a pic and they said they dont have anywhere to send the pic to. they also said they are not aware of any leaking problems. such liars, they need to recall the bottles.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I NEVER have leaks anymore, and once you get the hang of them, these bottles are fantastic for a colicky bubby. Here is how to do them so that they work:
(Credit here to Crunchie, who came up with the valve alignment tip - it works).

    1. Make sure the nipple and ring are wet when you assemble (this just makes a small vacuum to help them stay in place).

    2. On the nipple, you will see small grooves on the base that look like a roman numeral 2 (II). Depending on your nipples you may have 3, 5 or 6 sets of grooves. Align as many of these grooves as you can with the 'lips' on the inside of the plastic ring. (for 3 valve nipples you can get 2 lined up, for 5 valve nipples you can get 4 lined up and I'm not sure for 6, I'm assuming either 4 or 5 depending on how many lips there are - I haven't used those ones).

    2. Some people find it helpful to put the cap on before screwing the nipple/ring duo onto the bottle, others (including myself) don't. I find if I do it first the nipple just bends in the bottle and so the hole isn't compressed, leaking milk into the cap when shaken.

    3. When you screw the nipple/ring duo onto the bottle, make sure it has at least 2 good full spins. A few times I'd done it, it just did a half turn and felt tight so I assumed it was on. It wasn't! A half turn means it is on crooked and not properly. Practise a few times, and if you are aware when you are screwing it on what it feels like to get a few good turns, you get to know really quickly if it is on properly or not.

    4. When feeding bubby, line up the little notch on the ring with your bubby's nose. After a few sucks, you should hear a whistling sound and you can actually see the air bubbles rising to the surface of the milk.

    5. Combine this with general bottle feeding rules, like always tilting the bottle to make sure the nipple is always filled with milk, burp baby regularly, feed baby slightly upright to minimise the air swallowed, allow baby to take rests, removing nipple and reattaching if baby is making slurping/clicking noises and you should have a happy baby.

Trust me, well worth trying with these instructions!

  129. lining up the valves does nothing, wetting the nipple i guess does the trick (try lining up the valve without wetting, it doesn't work). also not convienent wetting nipple in public. try explaining this to your babysitter or grandparent watching child, not priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Ok- we get it. For YOU, lining up the valves does nothing. For some reason it does "something" for most of us.

We're not defending Avent here. I think the point of this blog post was to help out parents who had already made the significant investment into owning several of these bottles.

Don't have a fit because it's working for others and not you.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I hve a question though! My avent bottles don't leak, but you are supposed to hear the valve working and see the bubbles come up to the surface. This only happens sometimes, so doesn't work properly! How should I thread it so that it always makes that noise, I find when it makes that noise, bubby is fine but when it doesnt she is quite colicky.

  132. Thank you so much for the great tip. I used Avent bottles for my 2 children in 2005 and 2007, never had a problem. Now I was using them for my youngest en the bottle was constantly leaking. I followed your instructions and now I have no problems anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  133. I knew there had to be a method to get these bottles from leaking...I have never been so frustrated esp. when I spent so much $ on these Avent bottles. I didn't want to give up so easily, so before i found your forum I examined the nipple and the cap to see if there was some aligning I had to do. You are right, you confirmed what I thought and it works....thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  134. Thanks so much Crunchy, great solution. Avent should put this on the box!

    ReplyDelete
  135. Just read this after a stressful feeding session with my son... I hope it works! What annoys me is that it only leak sometimes, and only with the honey-colored ones, made using PES. I also have clear ones made with PP, which NEVER gave me this problem! Besides the material used, I really couldn't tell the difference between the two. We use the same Airflex nipples on all, and the rings seems to be identical. Please let me know if I'm wrong!

    So anyway, wish me luck!

    -Elmira-

    ReplyDelete
  136. oh another difference - the honey-colored ones have an additional short thread on its neck, whereas the clear ones just have the two long threads. I don't know if that contributes to the leaking... hmm.

  137. It was feeding time for my 5 month old son again and leakage as always. I googled avent complaints and found your blog. Just want to say THANK YOU! It worked for me. You have made me so happy. The worst is when you wake up at all hours of the night/morning for feeding time and the bottle does not stop leaking. Now with this solution I can say bye to the problem. Thanks!

  142. Thank you so much for this. We've been using the Avent bottles for 3 weeks with no problem and then tonight they all seemed to start leaking at once. Tried your suggestion and we are now leak-free again. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Thank you so much for the tips. I can't wait to try them. I have a different question about the Avent bottles that I hoped you could help me with. I am trying to find out the difference between the the bottles that have "AVENT" printed on them and the ones that have "AVENT Naturally" printed on them. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again !!

  144. I was using the Boots own brand bottles which were amazing, but after 5 months of a bit of wear and tear i purchased the new Avent bottles.

However i would not recommend them to anybody as the top of the bottles have exploded off on numerous occasions scalding myself, my mum and my mother in law. I assembled them and made the milk according to the instructions contained with the bottles and it makes no difference. I will be writing an official letter of complaint to Phillips. What a waste of £26!!

    ReplyDelete
  145. Thank you very much for your wonderful post!!! My husband and I were so frustrated... We have twin boys so this Avent leaks was not helping us a bit but thanks to your blog... we are Avent leak-free : )

    ReplyDelete
  146. Do NOT try the "screw the lid on with the cap and when the cap moves, its tight enough" This will result in a very wet you and baby.

I think the alignment thing might work though. I will try all week and report back after significant testing to prove this theory.

Thanks for the idea - I have a glimmer of hope!

  147. so i have the new avent bottles with the blue and white ring, and they worked perfectly for weeks. now all of a sudden, they leak, and bad. i lost almost half an ounce because one leaked 3x in a row. i don't know what i'm doing differently. can anyone help?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Ugh, I had my 4th child in January. Bought the bottles a couple months before and after she was born as I wanted 12 total. Anyhow, these things are horrible. Never used this brand before but thought I'd try it as it seemed closer to breastfeeding for my little one as far as the nipples go. She stopped bf at 4 weeks due to getting RSV from one of my older children (from calssamtes as my kids weren't sick and no one has been allowed over since it's flu season). Anyways, they leak all the time. I have done everything possible as said here and what they told me when I called.

This only works sometimes. And also why should I have to sit here with a crying baby ready to feed trying to line up these lines or wetting the nipple and everything else to insure it works??

This is ridiculous. They offered to replace and i have accepted and am willing to give it another round since I know my daughter doesn't want any other nipple.

Not only that, but now I have to teach my hubby, my 16, 8 and 7 year old how to do this?? They love to help and I need the help so I take it. I can't even begin to tell you what a hassle this is.

While I appreciate the tips, they don't always work. Not your fault, but Avent needs to do something about this.

BTW, I use powdered formula for the ease of convenince, I was told it's bc of the powder.

    ReplyDelete
  149. thanks for the tips dude.

Now i don't need to trash those bottles out after frustratingly trying to figure out if Phillip has f-up the whole avent range!

    ReplyDelete
  150. My husband & I were mystified by the "sometimes" leak also. We have the newer bottles with the extra ring & it was still happening. After reading this it helped a lot but it is hard to align them correctly. Pulling the nipple through sometimes knocks the alignment off & a it will then leak. I didn't think about overtightening knocking off the alignment as well. Thanks for the tip.
Despite this problem we have tried almost every bottle there is & these are still the best. The Dr. Brown's & Born Free, oddly enough, seem to make my son spit up. He has no problems with Avent other than an occasionly drenching.

    ReplyDelete
  151. By the way, while the leaking is annoying it seems every bottle out there has some kind of annoying attribute. Extra parts, collapsing nipples. The only ones I have ever used with no extra parts & no problems were the glass evenflo bottles, but then they're heavy & who wants to carry glass around?
    Avent is still our favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Glad it helped :). For those who still get the leak occasionally, check the alignment again.

adhis: Thank you for the support :D

    ReplyDelete
  155. anon, you're welcome

highliter123, I'm not sure if Avent in Malaysia will replace your bottles, you can call them up and give it a try. I got a pretty good bargain from Parkson, 3 bottle pack(latest one) for only RM53++.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hi, thanks for the reply.;)

I totally gave up on Avent and am using Tupperware instead. Quite regret to find out that the problem persists for quite sometime but they are not doing anything or recall the item.

The one you bought recently is BPA free? I will call them up for replacement or at least request for the adaptor ring.

Your blog is pretty informative for new mother, I should have read your blog before deciding to buy the Avent bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I am so excited to try this because I was actually on here trying to find a solution and also send a nasty email to Avent demanding a replacement or refund! Luckily I found this first and have not sent that email. I was so happy with these bottles at first, but after a couple of uses the leaking started and it was so frustrating...especially at 2 a.m.! So yeah, I hope this works for me. But honestly...still all too complicated when you have a cranky hungry baby impatiently waiting for her bottle. ::Sigh::

  162. I experienced leaking with these bottles when I worked as a nanny but figured out how to stop the leaks. Now that I have a baby of my own I bought them and the 4oz bottles came with the blue and white ring which I thought was for the purpose of stopping leaks (never had a problem) I just started using the 9oz bottles today cause my son is now taking a bigger bottle but these didnt come with the blue and white ring and are leaking! I will be trying your trick! Hope it works. Thanks!

  163. Oh lord I'm rolling over laughing. I just bought the new bottles and it was leaking very badly. 167. I was so frustrated with the Avent bottles and swore that I'll be buying a different brand when it's time for my baby to switch to the big 9oz bottles. 168. thankyou so much for you help, works a treat. I was getting so frustrated with these bottles and was ready to throw all of them away. Lucky i read up on it before doing it..

  169. I lost the plot with these bottles after the entire bottle leaked out when we were supposed to go out for lunch, even after shaking it before we left for the day and following all the fab instructions here which are great and do work most of the time. There is just no rhyme nor reason why the bottles leak!! So very angrily I had to return home to get another bottle. Cue a very annoyed mummy phoning avent and reading them the riot act. They suggested loads of things which my reply was- WHY IS THIS NOT IN THE INSTRUCTIONS??? Anyway they sent me out new rings, nipples and sealant discs to shake the formula up in and then I had to put the teats in and that made no difference so we went back to how we had always made them. I just phoned them there again as I am still really frustrated when making the bottles and them leaking through the vents and they have offered to replace them. They said there is no warranty but as goodwill they would replace them. I said I had no faith in the same bottles and said I had noticed the new ones with the new insert so they are sending me out those instead! Fingers crossed they manage to stop me swearing til the air is blue!!! So give Avent a phone, the more folk complain the more they have to listen, right?!

    ReplyDelete
  170. Avent should recall those leaking BPA free PES bottles if they want to save their name.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Thank you so much for the advice. I became upset when it started leaking and then found your website for the solution. Thanks again!!

    ReplyDelete
  172. Hi! I was the poster on the 14th Sept. I have received the new bottles (cloudy white with the adapter ring) and have had 100% success rate. No more leaking, so if you do complain to them and they offer to send you out replacements make sure you ask for those instead. I told them I no longer had faith in the the other bottles.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Avent refused to send me anything but the honey-colored bottles with no adapter rings. They insisted the adapter ring had nothing to do with whether the bottle leaked or not. I called three times.

I finally decided to use NUK nipples with my old AVENT bottles (they are short and fit in my cupboard perfectly). I just sold the extra unused bottles the company kept sending me. Thank you, AVENT for the $25!

  180. Oh my gosh, I am sooo glad I found this!!! There have been so many times when I thought I was going to cry I was so frustrated with these bottles. I am surprised that people haven't picketed Avent, and that they're rated so high, because I would have never figured out how to stop the leaks on my own. Shame on Avent for not offering more help, I am forever grateful for yours. However, on principle, I will no longer buy anymore Avent bottles. It should't be so complicated, and it's been months and months of frustration. Glad to know it wasn't only me.

  181. OH MY GOSH!! I am so glad I found this post, thank you sooooo much!! I love Avent bottles but these leaks drive me and my husband INSANE!! We used them for our first daughter and put up with the leaks but having just had my second daughter a month ago, I am already fed up of the leaks and couldn't bear another year with them!! So I was just shopping for some new bottles but finding a whole new set so expensive and not wanting to waste our good supply of avent bottles, I decided to google the leak and see what came up....yours was the first link! Your method totally worked and I can't tell you how relieved I am not to have to replace all our bottles. Its a shame Avent couldn't explain this since its such a simple technical solution and obviously so many people have the problem. Thank you again.

  192. Tried this and it did work for a couple of days and then the leaks came back. Tried realigning but to no avail. I did a live chat with an Advent Customer Service adviser who was pretty arrogant and denied there is a leak issue (one look at this blog and other messageboards suggests otherwise).

Eventually managed to get them to admit that the clear bottles were no longer in production and was advised not to use them anymore and that a honey coloured replacement would be sent to me FOC. Three days later the replacements arrived - they were the wrong amount, the wrong teat size and were still the clear kind, despite Avent having written details of what bottles I needed.

I went out today and bought Boots own brand and haven't had any leaks at all so far. Avent have caused so much stress to my family - having to change the baby's clothes after every feed because of leaks and all the washing that that creates, the distress to a baby of being covered in milk at every feed, the stress for us never having a bottle we could depend on...

I would advise anyone not to touch Avent with a barge pole. Not only are their bottles badly designed, their customer services are both arrogant and uncaring.

Thanks for trying to help people through this, but it's really Advent's job to do that and they clearly don't care, so as far as I'm concerned it's best just to make a clean break, change to a different system and avoid all the stress.

  193. I agree that their customer service department is unusually arrogant.

As far as the bottles still leaking, it turns out that wetting the nipples (teats) with water improve the seal. However, this is a ridiculous extra step to take, especially when considering that when out and about, I do not always have access to additional water. I told this to AVENT's rep, but of course, I was regarded an incompetent person.

  195. Gosh, I guess this is the new generation of Avent bottles! As for me, the Avent bottle I used on my son is the older generation type, clear bottle (I guess!) and I don't face this leaking problem at all even though at that time I didn't know anything about aligning the air valve. Btw, my son is 3+ yrs old now and no longer using Avent bottles.

  197. Goodness! 3 years of the same problem but Avent still has so many users. It's kinda ironic. They should have been banned!
